Used Future

Thoughts on what we once considered "the future," you know, when the Space Shuttle fulfilled all our dreams and desires as a marvel of technology.

“George Lucas wanted all the rebel ships to look secondhand, old, and beat up,” said one member of the film’s crew. “He wanted them to look like they weren’t as well built or well designed as the Imperial ships”—like they had already been occupied for a long time. When Star Wars was released in 1977, the question was no longer whether we should live in machines. It was how we would occupy them.

The B2 Stealth bomber was once the future of military aircraft. Now the Predator seems to be the weapon of choice - remote-controlled, often from the United States, the Predator flies high above the terrain and in military parlance is used for “target acquisition.”

The Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera. Used Future
The next few months will end an era that began six decades ago with a contraption called the Model 95 camera. That accordion-style machine delivered instant photography at a price tag equivalent to some $850 today. The SX-70, which spit out color prints, arrived in 1972. American life during the late 20th century had found its Boswell. The demise of Polaroid’s instant film cameras has been coming for years. Digital technology did it in.

Before George Lucas’s Star Wars came Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
"Lucas hired so many members of Kubrick’s team that their subset of the Star Wars crew was dubbed “The Class of 2001.” But he borrowed selectively. Kubrick’s 2001 environments were cohesive and balanced, informed by architectural theory and late-’60s aesthetics; they upheld the distinction between the astronaut modernists and the alien minimalists. By contrast, Lucas willfully mashed together minimalism, modernism, and NASA design. Two visual rhetorics are at war on-screen: The first is that of an industrial superpower; the second is that of a rogue fringe of misfits and mismatches."
